weekend and more
Hit Callico's always-fun Super Bowl party yesterday. With bebe in tow, so we didn't get to stay terribly late. But wish we had! Ate my share of deviled eggs, too. Also, taught bebe the cruel truth about being an offensive lineman (every time she tried ot run past me, I would tackle her. This was very funny for her the first 29 times in a row. The 30th time, however, one of her jagged razor-sharp fingernails got snagged, so the rough-housing game ended with much crying.) (So I guess she'll be a quarterback. ZING.)

On the drive home, I had the worst stomach pains I've felt in a long time. Still not sure why. Will probably just chalk it up to too much snacking, spicy food and a couple beers to wash it all down.

Sideways was, in fact, pretty damn entertaining. And I think I may like it even more over time. Possibly the best movie with a guy from Wings ever! (And who knew THC could actually act? So odd.)

Trailers seen recently:
* The Ice Princess - Oh, Dawn, Dawn, Dawn, how could you?
* Sahara - if you liked The Da Vinci Code and National Treasure, you'll likely eat this up with a spoon. On the other hand, if those two bring up the words "contrived pablum" in your mind, you might want to skip.
* Guess Who - I confess a soft spot for Bernie Mac, but I don't know...
* Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - WHOAH. OK, they might be able to pull this off.
* The Upside of Anger - Wow, lord no. Wild horses no.
* Millions - Hmmm. Might work, if it's not too schmaltzy.
* Melinda and Melinda - Great cast, so if it wasn't Woody Allen, I might have gone to see it.

Tonight, the book club.

Finally, a meme:
You scored as Jupiter. You are Jupiter-sociable, funny, and secretly artistic. Everyone loves you and wants to be your friend. You can tell a good joke off of the top of your head any time you want to.

WAH! Stomach pains! (Though I admit to an acid attack myself.)

I actually really liked the novel Sahara by Clive Cussler. Hell, I like most of the Dirk Pitt novels Cussler has written. For action-y techno-thrillers with a dash of history novels, they're sort of elegant trash. Cussler himself has been on the outs with Hollywood since they destroyed his book Raise the Titanic. Have you seen it, it's truly awful.

Yet hope springs eternal and I'll probably see this because I liked the book so much, even though I suspect it will make me angry how much they deviate from the book.

For the record, I didn't hate National Treasure. I thought it was stoopid, but it entertained me more, in its derivative way, than the disappointing Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow did. Maybe if Sahara entertains me enough, I can forgive it of its sins.

Okay, I just finished watching the Sahara trailer myself, and I'm still giggling. Matthew McConaughey is teh h0tness, and look at how he saved Reign of Fire! This movie looks to be goodbad, probably best seen at Beltway Plaza for the running commentary to enhance the feature.

My second senttence was incoherent. It should read:

McConaughey's acting talents are not hindered by mediocre fare. For example, his performance in Reign of Fire was the perfect sort of B-movie swagger for the crapful film. Saraha looks to be similarly crappy, so I theorize that the actor will shine as he did in the dragon movie. And, he is like, totally hot.

my favorite McConaughey quote
"...[Matthew McConaughey] has proven in film after film that he can't act and won't try, just as he proven on multiple magazine covers that he's not handsome, whatever the spindly old female editors want us to believe."

Since I'm "post-comment" button-happy, I just want to add that I am fairly certain that my admiration does not stem from media hype. It stems from his character in Contact.

Re: my favorite McConaughey quote
I actually don't hate him. In fact, I think he and Christian Bale more or less saved Reign of Fire from being entirely terrible.

I don't like most of his roles, though. Making me wary when he gets cast in something like this.

I haven't seen the movies you mention, but simply for employing this turn of phrase:

contrived pablum

you are my hero.
