Oscar guesses, picks and nominations.

Despite my best attempts, even I didn't see all that many of the films nominated. (I could argue that I don't generally like the films that the Academy seems to go for, but, whatever.) here's my vaguely-educated guesses.

The big list available here.

BEST PICTURE
"The Aviator", "Finding Neverland", "Million Dollar Baby", "Ray", "Sideways"

* Who will get it? "Ray"
* Who I wish would get it? "Finding Neverland"
* Who should have been nominated? "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Incredibles".

DIRECTOR
Clint Eastwood, "Million Dollar Baby"
Taylor Hackford, "Ray"
Alexander Payne, "Sideways"
Mike Leigh, "Vera Drake"

* Who will get it? Martin Scorsese, "The Aviator"
* Who I wish would get it? Alexander Payne, "Sideways"
* Who should have been nominated? Michel Gondry, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Don Cheadle, "Hotel Rwanda"
Johnny Depp, "Finding Neverland"
Leonardo DiCaprio, "The Aviator"
Clint Eastwood, "Million Dollar Baby"
Jamie Foxx, "Ray"

* Who will get it? Jamie Foxx, "Ray"
* Who I wish would get it? Don Cheadle, "Hotel Rwanda". I'm a Don Cheadle mark.
* Who should have been nominated? There was a good story on NPR that mentioned how thick the Best Actor category was this year. There were seriously fifteen roles that could have been picked. Nonetheless, I'd like to have seen Jim Carrey get the nomination for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Not that I think he should have won it. But it would encourage him to take more serious roles.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Annette Bening, "Being Julia"
Catalina Sandino Moreno, "Maria Full of Grace"
Imelda Staunton, "Vera Drake"
Hilary Swank, "Million Dollar Baby"
Kate Winslet, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

* Who will get it? No idea. Let's guess Annette Bening, "Being Julia"
* Who I wish would get it? Kate Winslet, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"
* Who should have been nominated? Holly Hunter, "The Incredibles" That NPR story I mentioned above was primarily about how few choices there were for Best Actress this year, because there just weren't that many good roles for women.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Alan Alda, "The Aviator"
Thomas Haden Church, "Sideways"
Jamie Foxx, "Collateral"
Morgan Freeman, "Million Dollar Baby"
Clive Owen, "Closer"

* Who will get it? Morgan Freeman, "Million Dollar Baby"
* Who I wish would get it? Thomas Haden Church, "Sideways" WINGS REPRESENT
* Who should have been nominated? Alfred Molina, "Spider-man 2"

Cate Blanchett, "The Aviator"
Laura Linney, "Kinsey"
