campaign politics dump

"In any case, McCain's smear - that Cox 'betrayed the public's trust' - is a harbinger of a McCain presidency. For McCain, politics is always operatic, pitting people who agree with him against those who are 'corrupt' or 'betray the public's trust,' two categories that seem to be exhaustive - there are no other people." -George Will

"The point is that there are stark substantive differences between these two candidates. Sticking to those differences as they launch their attacks is the honorable way to campaign."

Obama scales back the overly-ambitious 50 State Plan.

"John McCain's whole campaign is based on the idea that Barack Obama is risky, untested and can't be trusted to protect the nation in a crisis. But this week it was McCain who seemed unpresidential, as his Zigzag Express swerved back and forth across the median strip. His approach to the greatest financial crisis since 1933 was erratic and off-key. Would his presidency be any different?"

"I call upon the McCain campaign to stop treating Sarah Palin like she is a delicate flower who will wilt at any moment... You claim she is ready to be one heartbeat away from the presidency. If that is the case, then end this chauvinistic treatment of her now. Allow her to show her stuff."

Wondering why the McCain campaign is shielding Palin from the press? Wonder no longer. Man.

"A military prosecutor involved in war crimes cases here has quit his position, citing ethical concerns about his office's failure to turn over exculpatory material to defense attorneys for an Afghan detainee."

"Rice admits Bush officials held White House talks on CIA interrogations." So. What did the president know, and when did he know it?

Good read: Joe Klein on yesterday's crisis for the McCain campaign. More from Jay Newton-Small here. And another good read from John Dickerson here.
