"...The effects of the legislation Congress is considering this week will last far beyond November. And critics argue that the White House's approach won't help protect the country so much as put captured American soldiers at risk, further blacken America's image abroad, legitimize unconstitutional treatment of detainees, erode privacy rights, cede congressional authority and institutionalize what has thus far been the extralegal assertion of nearly unchecked, and therefore potentially corrupting power, to this president as well as those to come."
-Dan Froomkin

"The president goes to Capitol Hill to lobby for torture... President Bush rarely visits Congress. So it was a measure of his painfully skewed priorities that Mr. Bush made the unaccustomed trip yesterday to seek legislative permission for the CIA to make people disappear into secret prisons and have information extracted from them by means he dare not describe publicly."

Big budget bombs at the Toronto film fest.

before I forget

Yesterday afternoon, left work early, picked up M., and signed *all* the paperwork for the new apartment. Keys, deposit, whole nine yards. We then wandered around the place, discussed layout, where what stuff is going to go, etc. M. has an eye for this sort of thing, which is good, because I certainly don't.

Amusing detail: walking through the place yesterday, noticing all the quirks and stuff, I realized the ceiling in the kitchen is, for some reason, *really low.*

Another amusing detail: I will now live in Montgomery County, something I have never done before.

Afterwards, celebratory s00shi in Columbia. Nummers.

In other news, last night's Game Night turned into a Topless Game Night. (Well, technically speaking, it was only Shirtless, not Topless, but hey.) I'd like to say there's an interesting story leading up to how that happened, but really, there's not. It seems sometimes, these things just happen.

Played Citadels, which was pretty cool, and then there was like nine million people there all of a sudden. Met (and re-met) many cool and lovely people. Thereafter, a massive game of Apples to Apples broke out, while four other people (M. included) played Bridge.

Still haven't done all the updating that needs updating. Soon, soon.

Tonight, more packing. Tomorrow, a little moving.
