Drought, Diamond, and Dol Guldur
* Disaster: more than half of all the counties in the US are affected by the drought.
* Our aging power grid points to a grim future. (See also.)
* Former Florida Republican chairman admits that they worked to suppress the black vote.
* By the numbers: how the poor, the middle class, and the rich spend their money.
* Follow-up: Rick Perry isn't Texas's favorite son anymore. Bonus: this is the candidate the Tea Party loves.
* Author Jared Diamond isn't a fan of how Romney is talking about his book.
* Parsing out how cancer cells multiply.
* Nice: what Peter Jackson is adding to his Hobbit trilogy to fill three movies.

"The result is that we all wind up seeing the world that way, whether or not it was originally true. But because Republican politicians also wind up seeing the world that way, for the same reasons, that's the story that turns out to be important whether or not it was originally accurate or not."

Florida vote suppression thing should be bigger news, IMHO, but ugh.

Am I the only one who's hesitant about Jackson's decision to make The Hobbit a trilogy?

Also, I <3 Jared Diamond so hard.

as long as they leave out Tom Bombadil *again*
See, I've resolved that it won't be 'a Hobbit trilogy,' per se. It'll be 'a Hobbit movie plus a bunch of other Tolkien stuff that wouldn't get filmed otherwise' trilogy. The above article sounds like some worthy additions, and Mr. Jackson did a bang up job before, so he's bought some street cred in my book.

No. But, then, I wasn't crazy about his LOTR.
