Netflixin': three quick bits

The fall season is in full swing, but we've sat down to catch up on some movies recently, with decidedy mixed results.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was fun, but not great. Really, it doesn't live up to the original trilogy, and that's including the latter two movies, which weren't great either. All the pieces are there for a fun action flick, but in the end it just kind of reminds you why the originals were so good, and sort out why this one didn't live up to it. Sorry Mr. McShane, you tried your best.

I go to pick the movie for my birthday dinner, and I went with Predators. We'd watched the first one with Z. a month or two back, and I've been wanting to see the new installation for... a while. And man. It's damn good. Like, maybe, best in the franchise to date. The casting is great, the characters are interesting, and oh, right, those pesky predators are fantastic. Take note, Hollywood: this is how to revive a franchise well. I can go on and on about this one. Highly recommended sci-fi action.

Unfortuately, I'd also been looking forward to see The Expendables, but it's kind of terrible. I can forgive the bad plot and, uh, distinct lack of acting. But thereally bad script and kind of awful directing was paired with really bad action scenes. That's why we're there, folks! It should have been a fun action movie, and it really fails across the board. Avoid it like the pox.
