"What if you're wrong?"
Previously, on Lost...

* Previously: "There's still time." "Not for me."
* Elba. "What was truly devastating to him was the loss of his power."
* Principal Hathaway Reynolds.
* Hee, Arzt.
* Ilana uses Miles to read Jacob's ashes. Smart!
* "Jacob was the closest thing I ever had to a father." -Ilana
* Ben's dad! Dharma! "Imagine how much different our lives would have been if we'd stayed."
* Alex!
* Ilana sen to protect the Candidates, ah.

Jack: Where did you come from?
Richard: You wouldn't believe me if I told you.
Jack: Try me.
Richard: Not yet.

* Booty Babes and Disraeli, classy.
* Lapidus overslept! "The island still got you in the end, didn't it?"
* Dig his own grave! Hardcore.
* Is that The Black Rock? "It's just a test."
* Vast network of people and resources off the island.
* Miles knows about the diamonds!
* Jacob hoped he was wrong about Ben, nice.
* "Jacob gave me a gift." -Richard
* And, The Black Rock. What with those markings? Time to die!
* "You really had me fooled with that sweater vest. Linus, you're a real killer." -Arzt
* First time Richard's been back to The Black Rock. "I can't kill myself."
* "Now, let's talk." -Jack
* "If you change your mind, I'll be like a mile away." -Hurley
* "What if you're wrong?" -Richard
* Back to where they started.
* "I don't want you to die, Ben." -Locke
* "But once we're done, someone needs to be in charge of the island." Le whoah. I mean, maybe just a trick, but, whoah.
* "So. What will it be, Dr. Linus?" -Principal Hathaway Reynolds
* "I want to explain." -Ben

Ben: Because he's the only one that will have me!
Ilana: I'll have you.

* Ben goes with Alex! And gives Arzt his parking space!
* Miles, why you gotta be so awesome?
* Reunion.
* Sub. Widmore!

So, why did Ben and his dad leave Dharma? Ostensibly, in the alternate universe, Sayid never shot Ben as a kid, so Ben was never taken to the Temple.

Also, nice touch having substitute teacher Locke be the one to push Linus towards action in the other reality.

errrr....
"So, why did Ben and his dad leave Dharma? Ostensibly, in the alternate universe, Sayid never shot Ben as a kid, so Ben was never taken to the Temple."

Except Sayid did. That universe should have branched at the nuclear explosion... after Ben was shot.

Also, wasn't Ben still at the temple when the nuke went off? He should be dead, not teaching high school.

Re: errrr....
I was under the impression that the nuclear bomb meant that the Oceanic flight never crashed, and thusly, all the survivors' activities on the island never happened, including the time travel portions.

Re: errrr....
That was my impression as well. That does mean Sayid wasn't there to shoot him, which means that when the Big Event came around that Ben and dad ran with the others onto the sub and left before the nuke went off. That's my thinking anyway.

Re: errrr....
Except that when they showed the Oceanic flight that didn't go down, they also showed the remains of the island underwater... strongly implying that the nuclear explosion happened.

Re: errrr....
Maybe I'm lost on the thread, but yes that's the way the no-Jacob timeline works. The bomb went off, destroying the magnetic anomaly so that 815 didn't crash. In that timeline the island is underwater.

Re: errrr....
Nuclear explosion wouldn't necessarily sink the island. I think the key take-away from that shot of the island under water is that something happened to it because it didn't have a proper protector.

Re: errrr....
Sure: the whole nuclear explosion causing the island to sink doesn't make a lot of sense, but it is the only thing we have to go on... Why isn't there a protector of the island in that timeline other than the nuke?
PMMJ: Science!cheetahmaster on March 15th, 2010 05:30 am (UTC)
Re: errrr....
Agreed with above. We know that the island is sunk, but we don't know why exactly. Only that it's Jack's fault for trying to make sure they don't crash in the first place.

As a corollary, we do know that Jacob thinks the island needs protecting, and that he packed the Oceanic flight with many candidates, so when they don't show, then bad things happen.

Re: errrr....
Also, remember they set off the bomb to prevent The Incident. So we don't know the repercussions there. And we also saw Desmond on the Oceanic plane in the season opener, and he then seemed to disappear.

Re: errrr....
Like <lj user="cheetahmaster" said, the nuclear explosion reset a whole lot of things by preventing the plane from crashing in the first place... so the reality split goes back to at least as far as they ever jumped back in time, maybe longer. (Since Alex is around, we can assume that Rousseau never got stuck on the island, right?) I really liked this episode. Nice to know that Richard came to the island on The Black Rock... now the question is "What was his position on the ship?"

It was a very good episode in general, but a very good Ben episode. They continually prove how well they can bring out my disgust at a character and then make me feel sympathy for them.

Ok, I figured that this other issue would deserve a thread of its own. It came up thinking about Ben and his history.

What about Alex? So many questions come up! Did Danielle run off with Dharma to escape the Big Event? That doesn't seem likely given her state of mind. Did Alex somehow end up with Dharma instead of The Others?

And huh, so if Ben wasn't the one given the name on paper to kidnap Alex, who was? Was Danielle even alive after the nuke? gahhhhh, I suppose we might one day find out how Alex got off the Island in the Jacobless Timeline, but in the meantime there's a lot of questions. :)
szilardzorbtrauts on March 15th, 2010 05:29 am (UTC)
Danielle didn't come to the island until 1988. In the other timeline, there's some reason to think she never went there at all.

What I want to know is why Alex (and everyone else of any import) is in LA.
Capncaptain_boots on March 15th, 2010 11:10 pm (UTC)
ah! Of course! I keep forgetting she's not been on the island for longer than that. I don't know why I keep thinking she came in during the 30's when I KNOW Alex is way too young.

Very true about the LA issue. I'm just hoping there's a reason beyond 'easier to write with them all together', and given the show I feel confident there is one.
