Look, Academy. Making it so there will be ten nominees for Best Picture, instead of five? That's a dumb idea. If you're looking for more diverse nominees, well, vote for different movies. All it's going to do is let five other movies claim they were nominated for Best Picture. Which doesn't help either of us, and still isn't going to help 'more diverse' movies win the big show. You were padding out those five before. Put up or shut up. It's not an honor just to be nominated, and claiming you're diverse because you let WALL-E get a nomination it wasn't going to win isn't convincing anyone.

I don't think that really describes the situation, though. The nominators aren't the voters. Many members of the Academy would *like* to vote for blockbusters and genre pieces, but the elitist nomination committee would never allow them to be nominated (So the argument goes. I'm not making any judgements myself).

The downside I see is that with so many more choices legitimacy for the winner will be cheapened, because people could only choose one, and if there's 1 genre piece and 5 arty movies, maybe the genre piece wins because its voters were more focused. I don't like it. How about just broader nominations in the first place?

I'm pretty confident that the Academy members nominate the, uh, nominees in their respective fields. And that all Academy members nominate for Best Picture.

I'll try to look it up later, to confirm.
