giveth, taketh away

As a young comic book reader, my favorite comic was the X-Men, and the various spinoffs. However, I eventually got sick of it, and it put me off comics for years. (The good news is, as a result, I missed a lot of the terrible '90's.) Eventually, I got back in, and even found a couple X-men reads that I enjoyed. There's still good stuff out there, people! Even from the Big Two.

Two of those were Morrison's run on New X-Men, and the recent Whedon-penned Astonishing X-Men. Both told good stories with decent characterization. So when I heard there was a limited series that combined elements of both, something called X-Men: Phoenix - Warsong, well of course I wanted to check it out.

And from the thrilling Wikipedia entry alone, I found out that yes, it combined elements of both. But apparently only the bad ones. Seriously, I challenge you to read this thing and tell me how, as a writer, you hoped that would turn out. I've read most of the backstory leading up to it, and man, this thing just sounds like a confusing pile of crap. The only thing they could have done to make it worse was bring in Cable.

So, thanks Marvel, for reminding me why I like the X-men, and also why I stopped reading it. Feel free to tell good stories again at some point.
