"Unless the Republican Party ends its self-imposed captivity to social fundamentalists, it will spend a long time in the political wilderness. On Nov. 4, the American people very clearly rejected the politics of demonization and division. It's long past time for the GOP to do the same."
-Christine Todd Whitman

"Will we ever find out what President Bush really did in our name? There's so much we still don't know - about torture, warrantless wiretapping, and the politicization of the Justice Department, just for starters."

Indeed, he's a keeper. But the concept isn't terrible.

I will say that my own personal "number of times per week that I think "I should buy a gun (while I still can?)" statistic is higher than usual, up to like, 1.5 from a usual .05.

Do you think your rights to own a firearm you would otherwise purchase are going to diminish in the near future?
Jackbizarrojack on November 15th, 2008 01:01 am (UTC)
Not realistically, but it's a money thing. When I eventually have the cash to outfit my militia, I'll only be able to (legally) buy 20 gauge shotguns, which will be great if our hypothetical evil overlord controls us with his very small army of pheasants.

William Saletan is only half-right about Blacks and gays. The issue is really further complicated by the lack of visibility among Blacks of gay people--especially Black gay people. There are varying reasons why Blacks who are gay don't come out, but the main two are that they don't feel comfortable being openly gay in Black culture, and that they don't feel the mostly white openly gay community understands them.

There's a reason Atlanta has two Pride celebrations a year--the second-largest "all-inclusive" celebration in June, and "Black Pride" in September. The former has been steadily watching its attendance dwindle, as have similar Pride festivities in DC, NY, LA and Chicago. The latter sees more attendees every year. It's about time the gay community gets its head out of its ass, and starts working to better embrace Black (as well as Asian and Latino) gay and lesbian folks.
