Netflixin': the Mist
The Mist was surprisingly good. As per the course, I can't give away too much of the story without giving away the movie, but I can say it was a decent mix of scary movie with human drama and conflict. The cast, from the Punisher to Detective Pembleton do an excellent job. Throw in a couple decent King references and heavy amounts of atmosphere (figuratively and literally) and you're in for a good flick. Don't read any descriptions or synopses, just go check it out.

While I enjoyed the short story, I totally approved of how the movie deviated from it.

Yes, I actually really love this particular adaptation. But let's not forget it's by Frank "Shawshank Redemption" Darabont. I went in with pretty high expectations and they were all met. The only bits I actually quibbled with were the overly-orchestrated music at the end - the silence had really been working for me on the soundtrack - and Thomas Jane's "NOOOOO!" Don't get me wrong, I actually thought he was note-perfect in every other way. And who knows whose decision that was? Anyway, the cheesy melodrama brought me out of it a bit.

Whereas the ending was a punch in the stomach for me. But again, I've got a soft spot for movies with little kids in them these days, so that was a specific button.

The other stuff about the ending I loved! It was quite a gut punch, actually. I love the novella and have read it many times, and they made the ending of the movie MUCH bleaker. It was shocking to me. But THEN Jane had his big hollering moment and it took me out of it a bit too much.

Re: refined
Huh. I was so shocked and in love with the surprise ending his howl didn't bother me at all. Maybe it would on subsequent viewings...

I thought the SFX were pretty bad (in particular, the scene on the loading dock), but the ending more than made up for it. I didn't expect them to go through with it, and then they did. Nice. By which I mean, devastating.
